Full Project Description:
The ideal school

The project that we have decided to call ”The Ideal School” is planned to be a project where all the countries participating work together in creating an imaginary school.
The school is to be an international school that theoretically could be placed anywhere in the world as well as it is a school with students from many different countries.

The idea is that the different countries being a part of this all contribute with ideas on how they imagine the school to be. In the process of creating this school we have to work together discussing aspects as how we want the school to look, how many students we want, the variety of subject we want to offer etc.
Besides that there will be discussions concerning the curriculum and the values and principles of the school.

The discussions concerning the school will open up for international communication across cultures and provide the students with insight about other cultures as well as they will be confronted with their own believes.

Below are some aspects for your students to consider as a start. Along the way we will open up for further discussions and aspects to be agreed upon.

Please check out our homepage http://idealschool.dk and write us back at mette@idealschool.dk

• The name of the school
• The size – how many students
• The age of the students
• The subjects to be offered

Objectives:
We are two students from a Danish College of Education graduating as teachers in the summer of 2004.
We are both majoring in English, and are about to do a final project on the international dimension in teaching English as a second and a foreign language.

In the process of researching we need some practical experiences in order to realize our theoretical views on the subject.

We teach English in an 8th grade, and what we are looking for are some students from countries with English as their first language who are interested in authentic communication with our students. Our idea is to establish a network-service where the students representing different countries can communicate and exchange information about their cultures.

The network-service is going to be a web-page open for the countries participating. The idea is that the students on the internet-service can share knowledge about their cultures. Besides exchanging information about countries and cultures the project for the students is to co-operate in creating 'The ideal school'.
In the process of creating the concept of the ideal school, the students will be discussing cultural believes and values. These discussions will provide the students with international communicative competencies and insight that go beyond factual knowledge about cultures.

The project is set for a period of approximately 6 months, and is planned to start as soon as possible. The classes or the students who agree to participate in the project decide themselves the effort they want to put into it as to how often they join the debate. Nevertheless it is important that all countries being a part of this to some extent contribute with facts about their country and views on school-life.

We hope that there are some teachers and students out there who find communication across cultures and practicing English as an international language beneficial, and who would like to participate in this small project the next 6 months.

Please write us as soon as possible if you are interested or if you have further questions. The project will begin as soon as the different countries have signed up for the project.

Greetings from Denmark
Mette Jensen and Anne Pedersen
